Sugar Has Empty Calories

Sugar has empty calories! Damn it. What does that mean? It simply means that sugar and most sweeteners are good for improving taste and that is all...

Sugar Has Empty Calories

When I say empty calories, I mean that sugar will give you carbohydrate calories that are easy to digest and quick to get into your blood stream, and because of that, they have a high glycemic load. Besides carbohydrates, sugar will give you nothing else. No protein, no minerals, no fat, no vitamins, no roughage and no fibre.

Eating sugary foods like cakes, cookies and pastry will make you fat. It is a fact. But why is this so? Well, this type of delicacies are often made of grains, meaning they are mostly carbohydrates with high glycemic loads and then they are coated with a lot of sugar to make them tasty, increasing calories and the glycemic load even more. When consumed, the sugars and carbohydrates get into your bloodstream real fast, so your body's insulin comes to the rescue to remove them from your blood so you do not get diabetes. Insulin takes the sugar and places it in the liver, muscles and mostly... fat cells.

Sugary foods are at the bottom of my prefered food list. Last time, I did not care much and I ate a lot of those just because they are tasty and irresistable, but at that time, I was nothing short of a pig. A few months back (March 09) I went on a vacation and had limited access to healthy food. I could only get hold of sugary and high-carb foods. As a result, I instantly lost my ab muscles - one year of training! Damn sh*t.

I will be on the lookout for these foods and will be consuming healthier food, reducing sugar to until nearly 0%. That also includes bananas and raisins. Sure bananas are high in minerals and vitamins but their sugar level is extremely high as well. They can spike your blood sugar level very high and very fast. This is not based on any kind of scientific research. It is based on my own experience. I once ate 20 bananas a day for 2 weeks. Addicted to them... Banana high. I could not think straight and my body survived on them. One day without them left me feeling like a week old man who is nearly going to die. I realtered my diet after that, increasing complex carbs like grains (but not so much) and increasing lean protein and as a result, I felt more normal.

Oh ya, I am perhaps going to look into xylitol but then again sweetness is something I can do without, in my life.
