Starvation Mode |
Starvation mode is when a person who is on diet reaches a limit to the number of calories that the body would burn. In the end, that persons body starts retaining calories instead.Starvation ModeOrdinarily, the body responds to reduced caloric intake by burning fat reserves first, and only consumes muscle and other tissues when those reserves are exhausted. When your calories are severely restricted, the body thinks it's entering a prolonged period of time without any food. Starvation mode is a state in which the body is responding to prolonged periods of low caloric intake levels. Just like engineers at a power plant will shutdown energy production, your body will will work to conserve energy if you don't eat - mainly by slowing down your metabolism. Specifically, the body burns fat after first exhausting the contents of the digestive tract along with glycogen reserves stored in muscle and liver cells. So what does this have to do with weight loss? Just like the power plant, when you drastically cut your calorie intake, your metabolism will slow down and burn less food to convert into energy. In the first 2 days of starvation, there is a small absolute increase in BMR relative to values obtained from overnight fasting. The idea that yo-yo dieting permanently lowers your metabolism has been relegated to the archives. Overnight fasting is what every one of us does during our sleeping hours. So it is not true that going below recommended calories for one day is going to slow down your metabolism but quite the contrary, it may speed it up just a little. Referers Info
