Overpositivity

Positivity is good. But I experienced something from positive people, and that something is called overpositivity.

Overpositivity

What does overpositivity mean? It means being too positive. Let me tell you the full details to let you understand better what I really mean.

I am sometimes regarded as a negative person. I say things that are, well, negative. With criticisms and stuff. But believe me. I try very hard to be polite when saying the negative things as not to hurt feelings. But then again, I believe the real negative person is someone who sees anything and everything as potentially bad. I am actually not that kind of person. I am someone who likes to find out the truth and call it straight down the middle. When I see something that is bad or has a probability of turning out bad, I will say negative things about it out of my own opinion. I often tell people, "I am not pessimistic. I'm just realistic." I hate being a hypocrite unless I have no choice. If something is bad or not so good or has flaws, I will admit and say it out when asked. I will not lie to myself and everyone else that something that is bad is actually really good.

A person once told me that positive-minded people are successful. If someone thinks positively all the time, he will succeed without a doubt. Like what is said in some secret in some popular book. I accepted what he said at first but then being the analyst that I am, I took his statement, made some research and analysis. Well, now I whole-heartedly disagree. Blind positive thinking, to me, is overpositivity. Being overpositive is being positive without a base or a reason or prior research. If thinking positively can make a person successful, everyone can just think that they can become millionaires and everyone will become millionaires. Yes, I can buy a ferrari. Yes I can retire at the age of 35. Yes, yes, yes. But no! If only it were that simple.

In my humble opinion, overpositivity alone can never make a person successful. In order to get what you want, you need to know what you will need to achieve your goal. Let us say that you want to get a ferrari. Then you would analyze the ways to get a ferrari: you must have enough money to buy it, or you need to win it, or loan it, or steal it or whatever. Then from that, you will have to repeat the process after choosing an option. Let's say you want to steal it. So you have to find out what you need to steal a ferrari. Some thievery skills, and you need to find out who you can steal it from... Or let's say you want to buy it. So you must have enough money. How can you do that? Work, win a lottery, inherit the money... whatever. Then when you are done with it, you can then start your positive thinking: "I am positive that my efforts will bring me closer and closer to my goal and eventually achieve it, which is to buy a Ferrari!" But the difference between this and overpositivity is that in this case, you have a plan and a logical way to achieve your goal, and your positivity is to hope that the plan will work. In case it does not work, you might still have enough money to buy a Mercedes or a Toyota... hey still not bad, right? But with overpositivity, there is no solid plan. The whole brain is spent thinking "I can own a ferrari! I can own a ferrari!"

The guy who told me about the positive thinking gave me lots of examples. But after thinking about the examples he gave me, I found that the people in those success stories either had some skill or had some kind of help from outside to help them succeed. Or in short, they had the necessary resources needed that could make them succeed. Without those tools, they could only think and daydream and they will still be ordinary or even worse. You cannot just want to run a coffee shop and think positively that you will succeed. You need to scout the place, get some knowledge, experience or skills, and survey the competition. Diving straight into the business without knowing all that is suicidal. It would be like gambling. No matter how hard you try to think positively, the odds will be stacked against you.

So what is my advice? Just remember that overpositivity is really dangerous. Do not go with positivity or negativity or being sceptical or optimistic or pessimistic or any of those rubbish. Your time will be wasted. Just go with the truth. Do not lie to people and most importantly, do not lie to yourself! When something is bad, admit and acknowledge it. Do not lie to yourself saying it is OK, everything will be OK, think positive, and bla bla bla. Just face it, and then think of how you can solve the problem. Once you got the possible solution, then you can start to think positively that your solution will work! But to be safe, always prepare for the worst. Better safe than sorry. Yes, they are people who fail to do those but still are doing ok. But then that kind of people are short-sighted and they are mostly unstable. You want to be strong and firm. Cultivate on your own skills and virtues, and then only a very strong hurricane can stop you. Once you are at a high level, there will not even be a need to think positively!
