Action is Power? Not Anymore |
There is a saying floating around that goes: Action is Power! I have some idea how this saying came to existence and I disagree. Let me tell you what I believe is TRUE POWER!Action is Power? Not AnymoreAction is Power. How did this saying come about? Simple. There was a saying "Knowledge is Power." It meant the more knowledge you have, the more powerful you are. Then someone argued and said, "In this modern world, where the Internet is easily accessible, you can get a lot of knowledge and some maybe irrelevant. Information Overload. And with a lot of knowledge and no action, nothing can be achieved, and therefore, not achieving anything would mean being powerless. Therefore Action is Power."Why do I disagree with "Action is Power"? It is just too generic and does not fit. There is action everywhere. You go to a factory, you see hundreds of workers working. Action. Are they powerful? I see an ant running about. Action. I can just kill it with one squish. Is it powerful? "Action" is just too generic and cannot be attributed to power. What if you mean to say entrepreneurs who are brave enough to take action to start and grow their businesses? Just go find out how many businessmen who are brave enough to start their businesses just to fail and go bankrupt after a short time. A lot of action is there. But any power in a failing business? OK then. In this case, maybe you might say "Knowledge is Power is more accurate". Or you disagree with me and still think "Action is Power". Or you think "Knowledge + Action is Power" (more accurate). Or you think other things are power, like money, strength, authority, or even "positive-thinking". Hah! Or you might not know what to think anymore. Sure, money, strength and authority may lead to lots of power but you cannot deny the fact that there are people with lots of those but are still considered powerless. So what is real power? Nobody really knows, but everyone is free to say what power is. Including me. Let me tell you my definition of power really is: ABILITY IS POWER. Some people are very powerful. They get whatever they want. But they hardly do anything. Power with no action...? So let me explain. It does not matter how many actions you make, how much knowledge or experience you have, how much money you have, how strong you are, how many people you know, how much authority you have or how much luck you may have. If you are unable to accomplish something, you are powerless. If you are ABLE to do SOMETHING, you are POWERFUL. Enough said. Examples? Let's say there are 2 web developers. There is a goal: to develop a games portal in 3 months. Web developer 1 is ABLE to do it. Web developer 2 is UNABLE to do it, maybe not within 3 months. Therefore, web developer 1 is more powerful. Action, Knowledge, Strength, Money... those are just parts of the equation. Mere resources. The one factor that can put all those resources to good use and make someone powerful is Ability. You might know a lot of people, but cannot convince any of his acquaintances to help him accomplish goals... powerless. You might have a lot of money, but you cannot put the money to good use, and all you do is blow your cash on smokes, beer and etc... powerless. You might have a lot of knowledge, but cannot relate what you know with what you need to accomplish... powerless. You maybe hardworking and you do a lot of work. But the work you do maybe irrelevant to your goals and do not contribute to any accomplishment... Or you may miss out on ways to scale and reengineer your work processes to increase output... powerless. It is all in the ability factor. Superman is powerful because he has the ability to do many things that people cannot: fly, lift buildings, see through clothes... A King is powerful because he has the ability to execute anyone he wants, and do other things. Otherwise, he would be a powerless King. A business man is powerful because he is able to cut good deals, correctly identify and invest in profitable investments, grow his business... Even footworkers. You can sometimes consider them powerful. A good computer technician is powerful because he is able to get your crappy virused laptop fixed in a short time. It also depends on the goal you want to accomplish. From this belief of my, I respect almost everyone. I cannot say everyone, so I'll say "almost". And that should be pretty wide. Why do I respect almost everyone? I don't respect someone because he has money, or he has good looks or he is smart... It's because of the power, which is ability. Everyone is powerful in a certain area. If someone has no money, it does not mean he is not powerful. Since ability is power, he maybe able to do something you can never do, and in that case, he is more powerful than you! So from this, I believe almost everyone deserve respect. Then you may ask me what kind of people do not deserve respect. Well, that's irrelevant to this topic and will be another story to tell. What about the argument that if you do not do anything, you will not get anything? That's why action is real power? Again, back to what I mentioned earlier. They are confusing power with results. Action equals results. But power only describes results that are relevant and desirable. If you do something, you will get something. If you want to buy your dream car (desired results) and you waste your money at the casino everyday (action), you will get broke (results). Here you have action and results, but no the desired results. Is that power? To conclude. Let me say this once again. Action is not power. If it is, I can just do many actions 24/7 and become powerful. That is not the case. Action is just part of the equation. ABILITY IS TRUE POWER. Referers Info
